The verb 'ser'

In Spanish there are two verbs that translate 'to be', ser and estar. Both are irregular verbs. Today we'll talk about 'ser'.You use the verb 'ser'  in enduring situations, while 'estar' is used in situations that are 'short-term' .
Situations in which ser is used
Origin and nationality:
¿De dónde eres? Where are you from?
Yo soy de los Estados Unidos: I am from the United States.
Es francés. She is French.

Relationships:
Ellos son mis padres. They are my parents
Somos amigos. We are friends
Physical attributes
Yo soy alto/a. I am tall
Mi madre es rubia. My mother is blond
Personality characteristics.
People tend to behave pretty much the same one day to the next. However when talking about moods that can change quickly, use the verb estar!
Mi profesor es amable.  My teacher is nice
Su hermano es cortés. Her brother is polite
Possession.
La casa es mía The house is mine
El perro es mío  The dos is mine

Profession
Perry Mason es abogado. Perry Mason is a laywer.
Date and time
Hoy es el dos de noviembre. Today is the 2nd of November
Son las tres de la mañana. It's 3:00 a.m.
Color. Use 'ser' when an object is referred to in its natural color
La leche es blanca. Milk is white
